Starting Off the New Year the Right Way + Free Resolutions Template

So, there’s something really special about today. 1) It’s the first day of the year. 2) It’s the first day of the month. 3) It’s the first day of the week (the workweek, okay!). And 4) It’s a full moon. Can you believe that!? This is not something that happens often, and I believe that something really special is going to happen today.

Whether you’re spiritual or not many of us feel an overwhelming sense of energy on January 1st – we set resolutions, write down goals, and speak intentions out loud into the air hoping that the New Year will bring us something positive and rewarding. And, the truth is, these are exactly the things we should be doing!

Many of us have this notion in our head that, when we want to turn over a new leaf and take some steps into a different direction, we need a clean slate to do so. While this is absolutely not true, and you can start fresh and new at literally any point you decide to do so, there’s definitely nothing wrong with viewing the New Year as a fresh start and finally getting your butt into gear!

It All Starts With A Thought…

So, I’m going to take you guys on a bit of a journey here, and it all starts with your thoughts. You may not realize it, but your thoughts are much more powerful than you may initially believe.

There’s this thing called “The Law of Attraction,” and it’s exactly as it sounds – what you think and what you harvest in your thoughts you will eventually attract. That means if you’re constantly thinking negative thoughts, you’re going to attract negativity into your life, and vice versa.

Now, there’s a second part of this you’re going to want to keep in mind. Let’s say for example you don’t want to get sick. Let’s say you have a big event coming up and you really want to feel your best for it so that you don’t miss it. Typically you may start to think, “I hope I don’t get sick.” However, the keyword in that sentence is “sick,” and it’s a thought and feeling that you’re completely harvesting and allowing to grow in your mind. Chances are if you think about it hard enough, you’re going to get sick.

Instead, what you have to think is “I will have good health on this day.” By keeping the thoughts of good health alive and well in your mind, you’re most likely going to experience that good health and not get sick! Voila! That’s the Law of Attraction!

Let’s Set Some Intentions

So, now that we’ve gone over the Law of Attraction, it’s time to decide what sorts of intentions you want to set for the New Year. Now I’m going to assume that we all want positivity in our lives. We want success, good vibes, love, great health, happiness – the list goes on and on. There are thousands of intentions you can set for the year that will bring positivity to your life. For example, you can say:

  • This year I will practice self-love and take care of my mind, body, and spirit.
  • This year I will work hard and stop putting my dreams and desires on the back burner.
  • This year I will learn to let go of the little things and begin to only focus on the positives.
  • This year I will treat others with love and respect, and try to put myself in other people’s shoes whenever necessary.

Keep in mind that you don’t have to follow these word for word. If you’d like to then you’re more than welcome to, but you can change the phrasing any way you’d like. As long as you’re setting intentions that have positive vibes and outlooks, you’re already starting out the New Year in a positive light.

Write Down A Few New Year’s Resolutions

The best way to start the New Year off on a positive note is to set some resolutions. When it comes to setting these resolutions make sure you’re covering all the bases. Think about your mind, your body, your spirit, your job, your relationships, your health – think about all of it and leave nothing out!

Some great New Year’s resolutions include:

  • Taking better care of your body – working out, eating healthy, knowing what your body needs to thrive.
  • Saving your money.
  • Being more positive and optimistic.
  • Working on your relationships, both platonic and romantic.
  • Being more eager and hardworking in your career, or taking the step to immerse yourself in a career you love.
  • Taking the time to do the things you love rather than focusing only on the things you have to get done.
  • Allowing your mind some time to relax each week, either through meditation, yoga, or anything you’d like.

Personally I believe that writing down your resolutions on a piece of paper makes you more likely to follow through with them and stick to them even when the year finally comes to an end. Scribble them in a notebook, type them in the notes section on your phone, or print them out and hang them on your wall. Choose whatever works for you and stick to those resolutions – you deserve it!

One resolution I’m setting for myself is to practice mindfulness more actively than I already do, and I already took a few steps towards making this happen. I purchased a yoga membership for myself and also bought a bag for my yoga mat and a yoga block (thank you Christmas gift cards!). I currently practice yoga at home by watching videos on YouTube but I’m super excited to try it out in a class format and work on my poses.

What I love about yoga is how in tune with your body it makes you. Between figuring out what poses do and don’t work for your body, focusing on your breathing, and ending the practice with meditation, yoga is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your body.

Another way I’m working on my mindfulness is by trying to be fully aware of the products I purchase and how they’re affecting my body. One way I’m doing this is by working on transitioning fully from wearing perfume to simply using essential oils. If you read my Christmas post where I mentioned a few of my favorite Christmas gifts you’ll know that I received an essential oil diffuser and I fell in love with it within seconds. I could go on and on about how beneficial essential oils are for you but I’ll save you the rant and just say that they’re seriously life changing. One of my favorite places to get essential oils from is The Green Life. All of their products are natural and organic (and vegan, which is absolutely amazing) so I know that what I’m breathing in and putting on my skin is safe and won’t harm me. You only have one body and it deserves to be treated in a purely respectful way, and using natural and organic products is the perfect way to do that.

Keep Yourself On Track

By now I’m hoping that you have some ideas in your head of what resolutions you’re going to set and what sorts of intentions you’re going to practice in the New Year. We’re all human though, and we have to admit that sometimes it may be hard to stay positive and keep on top of our goals and resolutions. I really do believe though that if you write these intentions and resolutions down, and maybe even going as far as hanging them on your wall, it’ll be much easier to stay on top of them. When you’re constantly looking at these positive affirmations and goals day after day you’ll eventually find yourself practicing them naturally without having to think about it or force yourself to do it.

I’ll be honest and say that there have been many, and I mean many years where I set New Year’s resolutions and within a week I forgot all about them. I didn’t write them down anywhere, I never thought about them again, and so, naturally, I never accomplished any of them. I don’t want that happening to you though, so I attached a FREE template that you can find at the end of this post that will help you outline your goals and intentions for the New Year so you can be sure to stay on top of them.

Starting New Year Right Way

So, to end off this little New Year resolution setting and intention speaking, here’s a picture of me doing yoga! This is how I begin each of my days – following a yoga video with my essential oil diffuser as my sidekick. Taking your mind, body, and spirit on a journey through self-love is much easier than you think, so set those goals, start that positive thinking, and make 2018 your best year yet!

Hi Kasia, I’m glad you agree with me! The Law of Attraction sometimes seems too good to be true, but when I really put my mind to it it always seems to work for me and I believe it’s such an important practice to implement into your everyday life!
