5 Ways to Make Money as a Blogger

Did you start a blog with intentions of monetizing it? Not many of us did. For many of us blogging is just a really strong passion of ours and we honestly didn’t even realize it was possible to make money from doing something we love.

Make Money Blogger

On the flip side some people did start a blog with intentions of making money from it. They knew it was possible to use blogging to their advantage to either act as a side hustle or eventually be their sole source of income.

Whether you started a blog knowing you’d be making money or started a blog just for the fun of it, either way it is possible to make money from it – and eventually even fully support yourself from that money you’re making.

Making money from your blog is super exciting and I’m going to let you in on 5 ways you can begin making money from your blog.

This post contains affiliate links to keep my blog up and running!

  1. Create & Customize Your Blog

The first step to making money as a blogger is pretty obvious – you must have a blog! I walk you step-by-step through this process in my post How to Start a Money Making Blog and tell you exactly how to get your site up and running with SiteGround, so if you’re already panicking just know there’s no need to! Follow the steps in that post and you’ll have a blog set up and ready to customize within minutes.

First impressions are super important, and most likely your audience will quickly decide whether or not they’ll want to come back and revisit your blog after just one time of stumbling on it. This is why you want to make sure your blog is customized in a beautiful way. Choose a WordPress theme that’s attractive but not overwhelming, and set up your navigation bar in a way that makes sense and is easy to use.

You always want to make sure you’re posting quality content on your site and that you have a schedule set up of when you’re posting so that you’re staying consistent. Consistency is key when it comes to blogging and not only will it help grow your audience but it will also let your readers know exactly when to expect a new post from you. 1. Add Advertisements to Your Site

A simple way to make passive income is to add advertisements onto your site; this is definitely not mandatory though! Some people simply don’t like the look of ads on their site, and that’s perfectly okay.

If you do choose to join some ad networks though it’s a totally simple way of making some income from your blog. How it works is advertisers pay networks to place their ads on your site. Then, depending on the way that network works, you can either receive a pay-per-click payment, a CPM (cost per thousand views) payment which of course will increase as your pageviews increase, or even a combination of the two of those.

The good thing is you don’t need to have thousands of pageviews a day to make money off of ads. Of course the more traffic you have the more money you’ll make, but everyone’s gotta start somewhere! It’s also a good idea to start using ads from the get-go if you do plan on using them. I’ve read that a lot of times your audience won’t like it if one day your site has no ads and the next day it does. There definitely are exceptions though.

Some ad networks include:

  1. Join Affiliate Programs

Affiliate marketing is also another really cool and easy way to make money as a blogger. In a nutshell affiliate marketing is when you advertise a company’s product or service on your site. You simply join the company’s affiliate program and they’ll provide you with a link that you place on your blog. Then, if someone clicks your link and makes a purchase through your link you’ll receive a commission. It’s as easy as that!

Affiliate marketing is great because, just like advertisements, it’s basically a passive way to make money. The only work you have to do is add your links onto your site and voila, you’re done!

As a blogger though it’s important to know what audience you’re trying to target and always stay true to yourself. You should only ever promote and advertise products that you trust and believe in yourself. It’s pretty easy to tell whether bloggers are promoting products that they truly believe will benefit their audience rather than just promoting a product to make money off of it.

One affiliate program I’m a part of is ShareASale, and I’ve made the most money with them so far. ShareASale connects you to various companies such as Etsy and Tailwind and gives you everything you need to start promoting the companies on your site whether you want to use links or banners. It’s super simple to join and use.

Some other affiliate programs include:

  • Ebates – make money simply by shopping online.
  • Maven – pin products to boards you love and make a commission if someone clicks your link and makes a purchase.
  • Amazon Affiliates – pays you 4% of sales for most products.
  • Shopstyle Collective – create product widgets and get commission if someone purchases something using your link.

I go into waaaaay more detail about affiliate marketing in this post that I dedicated entirely to it! You can check it out here:

  1. Create a Product or Service to Sell

Instead of advertising other companies and products, how about you advertise a product or service you created yourself? This definitely will be much more work than simply joining ad networks and affiliate programs, but if you have a product or service you truly believe in then it’s definitely worth it!

Some things you can create and sell yourself include:

  • An eBook or ecourse5 Ways to Make Money Blogger
  • Blog audits
  • Spreadsheets or any other documents you create
  • One-on-one help given to other bloggers

The good thing about selling your own products is that, though they may definitely take some time to create, once you’re done creating it then that’s it. All you have to do is sell it and you’ll make money.

P.S. for some inspiration on creating your own product, check out Krista Aoki of Reroute Lifestyle’s eBook Career in the Making! She walks you through the exact strategy she followed herself to make a profit from her blog in as little as 6 months! I purchased it myself and I love everything about it – especially the fact that it’s only $25!

  1. Create a Page of All Your Resources

This step is super easy because as long as you have already joined affiliate networks most of the work is done for you. A resource page is basically a page on your blog that shows your readers all the products and services you use to keep your blog running and successful. To get an idea of how one looks, check out mine HERE!

Simply use your affiliate links to direct your readers to the different products and programs you use and if they decide they’d like to try them out themselves, you’ll make a commission from their purchase using your link!

Some things you can put on your resource page include:

  • A link to the host you set up your site with
  • Links to some of your other posts that you have monetized and that you think your audience will find helpful
  • Products you personally use yourself (for example, if you’re a beauty blogger maybe you’ll link to some of your favorite beauty products that you think your audience will benefit from)
  • Products or services you’ve created yourself and are selling

Resource pages are super helpful to your audience, especially if they’re a new blogger themselves, because you’re giving them everything they need to be successful in one spot. You’re saving them the time to do the research themselves, and who wouldn’t love that?!

It’s Time to Make Money!

Once you’ve completed all the steps above I can guarantee you you’ll start to see that it is possible to make money from your blog! However, it’s still important that you’re putting in work and are dedicated to blogging.

You can complete every step above but if you’re not sharing and promoting your blog, it’s likely that no one will ever even see it. You should never stop sharing your posts and promoting your blog as often as possible.

Blogging is not a get rich quick thing. It takes hard work and time, but as long as it’s something you’re passionate about it’ll be worth it in the end!
